What is Human Trafficking?

The use of coercion/deception to recruit, move and exploit (or intent to exploit) men, women and children. This has various forms including:

  •   Sexual exploitation

  •   Forced labour

  •   Organ donation

  •   Benefit fraud

  •   Domestic servitude

The shocking statistics

  • 6,993 potential victims were submitted to the National Referral Mechanism in 2018

  • Cases have increased by 36% from 2017 to 2018

  • Worldwide, 40.3 million people are in modern slavery (International Labour Organisation)

  • Human Trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world, generating more than $150 billion USD every year (www.a21.org)

  • Worldwide, the average age of a trafficked victim is 12 years (www.a21.org)

  • Although trafficking seems to imply people moving across continents, most exploitation takes place close to home. Data show intra-regional and domestic trafficking are the major forms of trafficking in persons. (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime)

  • The UK government estimates there are 13,000 victims of Modern Slavery in England and Wales. According to the International organisation for Migration, approximately 30 boys are trafficked to the UK each month from Albania to work on Cannabis farms

 

  • Worldwide an estimated 1,024,000 children are abducted from their homes to sex trafficking every year!
     

  • The UK is the highest country of origin for children referred into the NRM. The majority of children are girls who are sexually exploited.
     

  • Feels far from home? Of the total number of identified victims in the UK in 2018 the NCA report shows that 55% of those trafficked were adults and 45% were children.
